If you like to bake, you want a stand mixer. If you want a stand mixer, you want a Kitchen Aid.

Our Ultra Power mixer is nearly eight years old. It gets used quite a bit, for everything from whipping egg whites to kneading bread. It’s powerful enough to make homemade whipped cream a regular occurrence. It can stand up to the toughest bread dough. Whipped potatoes are better than ever. Massive batches of cookies are simple. Cakes (and frosting) become effortless.

We have invested in a second bowl, which makes life much easier when preparing multiple things or when you need the frosting before the batter bowl has been properly licked.

All of this, and it works and looks as good as the day we got it. Even the original bowl looks great. We have considered moving up to the bigger model, but it’s hard to justify when this one is as good as new and fits the bill 99% of the time. (We once tried making two large cakes at once, and had to do the final mixing in a separate bowl.)

If I were hard pressed for a negative, I would say the connection between the bowl and base could be better. We have had it come loose a couple of times while working large batches of bread dough, which was annoying, but not a big deal. If heavy bread is in your plans, the larger model with the peg-mounted bowl may be a better choice.

Either way, a Kitchen Aid mixer is a must-have item for any serious cook.
