What do you call a stand mixer that lasts for many years (maybe forever!), mixes, beats, kneads bread dough, grinds meat or makes juice or stuffs sausages (with certain attachments)? A Kitchen Aid, of course!

I have had mine for (gulp) about thirty years, and given it a lot of use. It came without a pouring shield, so I just bought one (and hardly ever use it). It came with just one bowl, so I added another (which is hardly ever used, either).

It’s a lovely little workhorse. However, if I were to start over, I might get the more deluxe model, since with it it’s possible to beat things over hot water or ice, which can come in handy on occasion. Also, the fancier version can handle larger recipes for bread dough. (With mine, using fairly standard bread recipes, the dough climbs up the dough hook and heads for the ceiling.)

When I bought it, I treated myself to several of the attachments, and for a while enjoyed such simple-minded pleasures as stuffing sausage. But then when I bought my next major indulgence, a large Cuisinart food processor, I didn’t bother with the Kitchen Aid’s attachments any more. I even retired the dough hook, since the Cuisinart does a great job of kneading dough.

The next addition to my batterie de cuisine was a hand-held mixer. I find it quite handy for quick beating of, say, and egg or two.

And then I bought an immersion blender. (Someone should tie me down to keep me out of the stores which sell such goodies.) I love it.

But have any of these other appliances eroded my faith in my Kitchen Aid? Never! I don’t know how I could possibly cook without it. I don’t know how ANYONE could cook without one! There’s nothing like it for any sort of heavy-duty mixing, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
