This Oster Hand Mixer #3170 was a early Birthday present from my sister. A few weeks ago she came up from Florida for a family visit and stayed for 2 weeks. Now I had a Hamilton Beach hand mixer that I’ve had for 2 years. One day while my sister was still here I was slicing up a roast that I made that day, and my sister was mashing the potatoes with my mixer. Half way through mashing the potatoes the mixer made a funny noise and cut out. I told her to check and make sure that she didn’t pull the cord out of the outlet. But that wasn’t the answer. I had my husband look over the mixer and he tried it out in another outlet. But it still didn’t work. I knew then that I was going to have to purchase a new hand mixer. I only had this mixer for 2 years. I was really surprised that it didn’t last longer then that.

So the next day off we went to check out several stores for a new mixer. The first stop was Lowe’s, because I had to get some paint for my front railing on my porch. While I got my paint, I also checked the isle of small appliances. They had a Cusinart and a Oster hand mixer there. The Oster mixer was on sale and priced at $19.99. I really liked the looks of the Oster that was on display, but I still wanted to check out a few more stores. My sister liked the Oster mixer also. She wanted to buy it and take it home with her. She said her mixer was old and she liked the looks and how it felt in her hand. I tried to talk her out of buying it because it would just be another item that she would have to take home on the plane. I told her just to wait until she got home, and she could get one at the Lowe’s in her area. But she insisted she was going to buy it anyway, which she did.

We checked a few other stores for mixers. I wasn’t in a real hurry to buy a new mixer, and decide to wait a few more days to check a few other stores that weren’t in our immediate area. When we finally got home, she handed me the Lowe’s bag and said Happy Birthday to me. I said What.!! She just laughed and said the mixer was for me, and she really didn’t need a new mixer. So I got a early Birthday present that day that I really was in need of. Anyway enough said, now on to my review.

I liked the feel of this Oster Hand mixer #3170. It is a tad heavier then my old hand mixer was. Although I do have a little arthritis in my hand, but I found it was very easy for me to be able to hold and handle.

FEATURES OF THE OSTER HAND MIXER:

EJECTOR BUTTON: On top of the handle there is a nice oversized ejector button for releasing the beaters. With just a easy push of the thumb, and the beaters will eject out smoothly.

SPEED SETTINGS:

Below the ejector button there is a lever for 5 different speed settings.

This speed lever goes form 0 to 5.

Speed # 0 is the lever that turns the mixer on or off.

Speed #1 is used for stirring liquid ingredients and is nice for preparing packaged puddings.

Speed #2 is used for mixing and combining ingredients where you need a brisk action, just enough to blend.

Speed #3 is for blending cake mixes or for recipes that call for a medium speed. It’s also nice for creaming butter and sugar together.

Speed #4 is good for beating frostings, or for whipping cream.

Speed #5 is good for whipping egg whites. I like to use this speed for whipping my mashed potatoes. It does a great job of mashing potatoes and they come out light and fluffy.

BURST OF POWER BUTTON:

This button is located beneath the speed control lever. This button will give you an added boost to the selected speed setting when you have heavy mixing ingredients. It will help the beaters to go through the mixture easier. Once the button is released, the mixer will then return back to the original speed setting.

DOUGH HOOKS:

These dough hooks are chrome plated and are nice to use to knead bread dough, pizza dough or heavy batters. The Dough Hooks are inserted into the same drive hole as the beaters. When using the dough hooks I’ve found they work better at a lower speed to get the best results. When my sister was still here I made homemade pizza dough, and the dough hooks really came in handy.

BEATERS:

The beaters are a durable full size chrome plated beaters. Their designed to allow for a thorough, fast mixing for all types of batters.

HANDLE:

I like the feel of the handle in my hand. It has a slight downward curve to it, and it’s ergonomically designed which adds comfort to my hand and I don’t experience any hand fatigue while using the Oster Hand Mixer.

THE CORD:

The cord is just the right length. It’ll reach any outlet on your counter easily. It’s not that long that you have to worry about it hanging over the countertop and having the mixer pulled off by young children.

WATTAGE:

The Oster Hand mixer has a powerful 240 Watt motor.

WARRANTY:

The Oster Hand Mixer also comes with a One Year Warranty.

CLEANING:

Before I used the mixer for the first time I did wash the dough hooks and the beaters out in hot soapy water, and dried them thoroughly. Both the beaters and the dough hooks can be washed in a dishwasher. When I’m done using the Oster mixer I also wipe down the body of the mixer with a damp cloth and then wipe it dry. I do this mainly because I’ve found that certain mixes will sometimes spatter up onto the head.

STORAGE:

It’s best to store the Oster Mixer on it’s heel rest in a dry place. I store mine in my cabinet while I store the beaters and dough hooks in my cabinet drawer.

USING THE OSTER MIXER:

First make sure that the speed control is on the off position and the mixer is unplugged from the outlet. Insert the 2 beaters one at a time in the drive holes until it’s locked into place. At first I had a little trouble getting the beaters inserted into the mixer. This is why it does pay to read the manual. I found out that I had to insert the beater in and then turn the beater slightly and then push it in until I heard it click. I finally got both beaters in. I plugged the cord into the outlet, and then set the mixer for the correct speed setting.

The heal rest is great, because it allows me to be able to set it next to my bowl while I’m adding other ingredients to my batter, and I don’t have to worry about the mixer tipping over.

It took me a few times to adjust to the different speed settings. Another thing I found out was I had to be careful not to over beat certain mixtures, as with some recipes this will make some mixtures tough.

THE DESIGN OF THE MIXER:

The body of the mixer is White. The ejector button, speed setting lever, and burst of power button are all in a silver color. On the side of the mixer the word Oster is written and is also in a silver color. The silver coloring against the white body of the mixer really stands out. So the Oster Hand Mixer not only works well, but the design of the mixer also looks quite nice.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS:

I’m very happy with my Oster Hand Mixer #3170. If my sister hadn’t given me a early Birthday present to me for my Birthday, I might have gotten a brand that I wouldn’t have been satisfied with. I’ve used the mixer quite a few times since I’ve gotten it, and I’m pleased with the results. I especially like the comfortable shape of the handle, because it gives me comfort, balance and control. The dough hooks are another feature that I like It’s been a long time since I’ve made my own pizza dough, and now we are enjoying homemade pizza again instead of frozen pizza that we used to get from the market.
