I love to bake whenever my schedule (and wallet) allows for it. Being that I’m still a student, I really don’t have too many occasions to bake for, and still being single my friends are the ones who end up with the cookies of my labor. This past Valentine’s day I decided to bake cupcakes for a lab meeting and bring the remaining ones in for friends. In the past, I’ve gotten by on a wire whisk, but I was really getting sick of it to make cakes. So, I headed to Walmart to see if I could pick up a small mixer.

The Sunbeam box caught my eye immediately. It was small, white and only $6!!! The next brand up was $14. I debated getting the slightly more expensive model, but then realized that the next time I would do any any serious baking would probably be at the end of the semester. I therefore decided to go with the cheaper Sunbeam 6 speed mixer.

That night I made cupcakes using the new mixer. It’s a plain, utilitarian white, very sleek and light weight. This mixer is very compact and it was easy to move it around the bowl. The beaters fit in their slots easily and were easy to take out. The mixer itself was good, a little on the loud side and it didn’t really get all of the lumps out of the cake batter. The lower speeds (1 and 2) seemed to work the best, providing a constant humming and a good mixing of the batter. The higher speeds were very noisy and I didn’t notice much of a difference in the quality of the mix when using them. The switch for changing speeds is located on top of the grip of the handle, so changing the mixing speed was as easy a flick of the thumb. Overall, this mixer was very easy to handle and clean up was very easy; the batter rinsed off the beaters immediately.

If you’re a serious cook who uses mixers all the time, not just for baking but for making such things as home made mashed potatoes, I wouldn’t recommend this beater. It wouldn’t be up to any serious mixing jobs because it just doesn’t have the power, even on the highest speed. If you just need a mixer once in a while this is an ideal mixer for the price.
