Recently I had the pleasure of purchasing a new hand mixer. The old one died after over fifteen years of very faithful service. I was impressed with the sheer numbers of features the newer models had.

My problem was I didn’t want to drop an arm and a leg for a new mixer. Truth be told, I don’t use it that much, and couldn’t justify spending $60+ for something to sit in the cabinet 11 months a year.

I saw the super cheap-o models, made by KitchenTools and Proctor Silex, and thought they would probably do fine. Then, I saw the Black and Decker Spatula Smart Mixer.

The advantage of this machine over other low-end models is it comes with a high-end option: a spatula attachment. The spatula attachment is helpful for mixing dry ingredients or splashed up batter from the sides of the bowl as you are mixing. Thus, you get more of the ingredients in the mixture and less sitting on the side of the mixing bowl.

There are six speeds: Blend, Stir, Mix, Beat, Whip, and Power Boost. Power Boost gives maximum power to whichever of the previous five speeds you are using. If you get a particularly thick area of your mixture, just push the "Power Boost" button, and it gives you a quick burst of extra power (Tim Taylor would love this!).

Cleaning is a breeze. Just put the whisks and spatula attachment in the dishwasher, and wipe the handset with a wet towel.

It comes with a 2-year warranty backed up by a company that has been around forever, so if something goes wrong, you’re not worried about how to find the manufacturer to perform service.
