I wasn’t yet ready to plop down the $250 or so dollars for the stand mixer I wanted but I was ready for a hand mixer a tad bit more substantial than my $6 Sunbeam hand mixer that I’d got from Rite Aid a few years back. My choice was the Braun 4-in-1 MultiMix Hand Mixer (M880).
Product Details
Most hand mixers employ a horizontal motor design. The Braun MultiMix uses a vertical power system, with the motor directly over the attachments to deliver optimal power. It features 3 speeds and a power pulse. In addition it has a hefty 280 watt DC motor with overheat protection. The other hand mixers I saw in the store had 200-220 watt motors.
But of course you’re probably interested in the 4-in-1 capabilities. It comes, of course, with beaters. These are not your mother’s beaters. They are thinner and have an asymmetrical design that it supposed to increase volume and cut back on splash. It also comes with two bread hooks (for up to 3 lbs. of dough) that snap into your mixer just like the beaters, as well as a chopper and handblender shaft for whipping and pureeing.
Other features includes a multi-positional cord, no air vents for easier cleaning, and a flat base that allow it to be set down on counter. Attachments can only be taken off when the power is in the off position. For storage the cords wraps neatly and easily around the base.
Of course, all this functionality comes with a little bit higher price tag than my old hand mixer. Suggested retail price is $39.99, but with a 20% percent discount at Linens N Things I got mine for $32
Usage
Beaters
Overall I like them. They click in easily and are easy to take off as well. I do believe the design of the beaters increases volume and makes things lighter and fluffier, such as when I’m creaming eggs, sugar and butter together. I do think they don’t splatter as much. But on the negative side I found that my cake batter actually stuck more to them and climbed up onto the beater shaft, making for a messier clean up. In that respect the old fashioned beater design did better for me. However, there’s no doubt that this mixer has more power as it seems to take less time. I also notice that it doesn’t get that hot burning smell that my old mixer did on heavier jobs or ones that take a while. This power, though, comes with a price: the mixer is a bit heavy for a hand mixer, perhaps in part to the vertical design. I actually end up holding it backwards when I have to hold the mixer for several minutes as it’s less tiring.
Bread Hooks
Good idea but just doesn’t work for me. As mentioned above this mixer is heavy and trying to use this while kneading dough with the hooks on is too much work for me. I used it once to make pizza dough and vowed that if I ever get to the point of making a lot of bread doughs, I will break down and get a stand mixer with a dough hook. Hand mixers are best for light-weight mixing and bread dough is not what I would consider such a task. I’d rather knead by hand than use these.
Handblender (comes with beaker)
Here again, another good idea that just didn’t work for me. It took me a while to figure out how to attach this without consulting the directions. There is a sliding cover next to the beater holes which you’ll need to slide back, slip this in, and twist on. It can only be used in the pulse position. It has a single blade, a little under 2 inches in diameter. It is designed for making smoothies in the beaker or you can puree foods such as soup directly in pot. I found it didn’t do a good job for making a smoothie for me in the beaker. I use frozen strawberries and blueberries along with fresh bananas. It didn’t break them up like a regular blender. I also usually add a few ice cubes and here again, there’s no way that this little tool can break down the ice cubes. It does a decent job of pureeing soups directly in the soup pot, but here again, it can’t compete with a regular blender for a nice smooth puree.
Chopper
I didn’t think I would like this, but for small chopping jobs, this is wonderful and so much easier than my old mini chopper. To use attach the chopper gear box to the blender (clicks right on), insert the chopper blade into the chopper bowl, fill with food that needs chopping, and attach to mixer. Use pulser to chop. I was surprised how easy it was to use. No twisting on lid like those cantankerous mini choppers. This was much easier and did a fantastic job. It’s about the same size, with a blade that measures 4 inches in diameter. I’ve chopped veggies and nuts with ease in this chopper.
Overall rating
I’m pleased with this hand mixer overall. I use it mostly for mixing cakes and cookie dough and it does very well for me in those areas, despite being a little bit heavy and perhaps the dough/batter clinging to the beater more than I would like. It seems like it has a very durable motor and won’t be burning out on me anytime soon. As for the extra attachments, I could do without the bread hooks and handblender, but I’m very pleased with the chopper.
I wish you had the option to select which attachments you want because I don’t like paying for things I don’t need or want. But nonetheless, it’s a good solid mixer and worth 4 stars.
