KSM100 - Kenmore 600 Watts KSM100 Stand Mixer Well, I wanted to buy myself a mixer so I started to look for what I should buy. From checking a lot of places and...
We were in the market for a stand mixer and had pretty much decided on a KitchenAid model, until I was at Sears and saw this unit. I was surprised to see the larger bowl, ability to use KitchenAid attachments, and very strong 600 watt motor. Still being somewhat dubious I went home and checked out the epinions reviews. Based on those, I purchased it for my wife as one of her Christmas presents.
Christmas afternoon we made some cookie dough and it worked fine, though we did think it was loud. On the 26th we went to make icing for a gingerbread house project. This started with powdered sugar in the bowl and then adding the wet ingredients. Set the speed to its lowest setting, turned the mixer on, and BLAM, powdered sugar everywhere. We noticed that right as you turn it on, the mixer starts out very quickly, then slows to the speed you have selected. I went to the manual and it said the mixer should start slowly and then gradually speed up to the selected speed. Obviously ours wasn’t doing this. So we cleaned it off, boxed it up, and headed back to Sears.
At Sears, I found a (unusually) helpful employee that agreed the unit shouldn’t be behaving as it was. I was still wondering though if it was a specific defect, or an overall design flaw, so I asked if I could plug the floor model into an outlet and see what it did. She got the manager, we plugged it in, and sure enough, it started out fast, then slowed down. Both Sears employees were a bit startled, and went so far as to suggest that maybe a “batch” was defective. Since we had an outlet, I also took the 300 watt KitchenAid model over, plugged it in, and check it out. It started out exactly at the speed selected, with no variance.
I wasn’t willing to start playing Mixer roulette with more Kenmore models in hopes of finding one that didn’t do this, so I ended up returning the Kenmore and bought the KitchenAid (which, because of sale prices, was only $25 more, though with a smaller motor and bowl).
After using the KitchenAid we are very pleased to have gone this direction instead. The Kenmore was a LOT louder (I wish I had a decibel meter to measure the two, but it’s very significant) — you could hear it running from an upstairs bedroom with the door closed. The Kitchenaid is barely audible outside of the kitchen. I really can’t emphasize enough the difference in noise, the Kenmore was so loud it grated on your nerves, while the KitchenAid makes less noise than our hand mixer.
It’s too bad, because the larger bowl, bigger motor, better looking design (in my opinion), and cheaper price seemed to make this look like a great deal, but it looks like it falls in the “if it seems to good to be true, it probably is” category. Too bad.
