Can you smell the aroma of rich Chocolate Chip Cookies floating on the breeze through your kitchen? Are you drooling while you are waiting for them to finish cooking so you can pop a soft cookie oozing with creamy melted chocolate into your mouth? Are your heightened senses waiting for the luxury of these cookies to engage them in blissful moments of ecstasy? Now, can you feel the heavy disappointment of having your mixer burn up while trying to blend the heavy dough? There is nothing worse than having to put away your partially made cookie dough so you can shop for another mixer. Well, if you purchase the KitchenAid KHM5TB Classic Plus 5 speed Mixer shopping for a new mixer will not be necessary for a very long time and fresh cookies will be just minutes away.

Baking treats is one of my favorite pastimes. My family especially loves Chocolate Chip Cookies with extra chunks of chocolate and lots of nuts. I have a very large family so when I make cookies I triple, or quadruple, the batch sizes. I have burned up many motors on cheap mixers while preparing these cookies. After the death of my last mixer (11 years ago), I went on a crusade to find one with extra strength and power. I wanted a mixer that had the ability to handle the heavy cookie dough mixtures. I wanted to invest in an appliance with durability, versatility, and strength. I also needed this appliance to be lightweight, easy to use and easy to clean. My hunt ended at a local ACE hardware store where I found the KitchenAid KHM5TB Classic Plus 5 speed Mixer.

After reading and comparing information on the packages of various models and brands I chose to purchase the KitchenAid. I will boldly admit that I was very skeptical about the abilities of this mixer, because few of my previously owned models lived up to their reviews. But, it was by far the best mixer in the store, and the most expensive at $63.00. Because of the many great qualities of this mixer it has become one of my favorite appliances.

What makes this such a great mixer?

It has a powerful motor that is built for strength and durability. This powerful motor is relatively quiet, sounding like a purring lion. It is gentle enough to blend whipped egg whites into cake or waffle batter, yet tough enough to blend chocolate chips and nuts into thick cookie dough. The motor does not stall during mixing and, according to the manufacturer, it has an electronic sensor that automatically increases the power when necessary to maintain a steady, consistent speed. The sliding speed control is within easy reach on the ergonomically designed handle, allowing for easy speed adjustment during mixing.

The body of this mixer is also pleasing to the eye. Its 3.6 lb. body is made of white light-weight plastic with silver trim and its 7 ½ inch long x 6 inch high x 3 ½ inch wide body is gently rounded in the front with a concave curve at the back, giving the mixer the appearance of having short legs when it is resting on its base. This also allows for greater stability and balances the weight of the beaters when in use. There are two air vents in the front and two on the base which keeps the motor cool. The handle is comfortable to hold. There is a gentle notch underneath, near the speed controls, where my pointer finger comfortably rests. I will honestly say that I usually do not use the handle in a normal way during mixing. I hold the mixer from the front, near the air vents. My thumb rests on one side of the mixer, my pinkie finger balances the opposite side and my middle fingers grip the inner curve of the handle. I find this makes it easier to balance and guide the mixer, and it is easier on my wrist. The undercarriage of the mixer has a smooth design allowing for easy clean-up of spattered batter. It also has an imprinted diagram to show where each Turbo beater should be inserted.

The 7 inch long TurboBeaters are stainless steel. They are made of thin, gently rounded metal rods that are cleanly welded together at the top and firmly embedded into the stem of the beaters. Each TurboBeater has flanges that line up with slots in the mixer. One of them has a collar above the flange, designating its correct position in the mixer base. This one must always be inserted and locked into position first before the second TurboBeater accessory is inserted and locked into position. I purchased a second set of TurboBeaters so that I could whip egg whites or whip cream with one set and mix the batter with the other set. These beater accessories are easily removed with just the touch of the ejector button located just above the speed control lever. I often wash them in the dishwasher and they still look new. Note–always make sure your mixer is in the off position, and unplugged, before attempting to remove the beaters or you will spray batter everywhere and possibly injure yourself or your mixer.

The power cord is smooth, white and easy to clean. It comes with a plastic tie that wraps around it during storage. Since there is not a designated area around the base to wrap this cord, I keep the mixer in its original box for other reasons that I will tell you about a bit later.

This mixer was created to be durable and comes with a one-year Total Replacement Warranty. I have never had problems with this mixer. Most of my previous mixers lasted a couple of years before the motors would burn out. This one is like an Eveready Battery. It just keeps on going. I have used it almost daily for the past eleven-going-on-twelve years and it has lived up to the descriptive words of the manufacturer. I feel that it is truly the best hand mixer for stiff cookie dough that I have had the privilege of owning.

Some more interesting facts about the KitchenAid mixer:

It comes with a complimentary Liquid Blender Rod which has a hard white plastic widget-ma-twidget (my word) for mixing drinks, shakes, etc. It is great for mixing powdered drinks like instant breakfast or sports drinks. It measures 8 ½ inches from end to end and easily fits into tall, thin glasses. Use caution when mixing drinks in glass containers as they have the possibility of breaking. I will honestly say that it spends most of its time tucked neatly away in its box because I don’t make many powdered drinks. (My sister-in-law uses hers on a multi-daily basis).

It also comes with a 22 page manual. Eleven pages are instructions and the other eleven pages contain recipes.

It comes with a double sided page with instructions on how to use the drink mixer. A fun note to readers—these directions are given in five different languages!

Also included is a two-page magazine size pamphlet listing all the Counter Collection items sold by the manufacturers of KitchenAid. This pamphlet lists product information, current prices and order information containing mailing addresses, fax numbers and Internet sites.

Finally, there is a Total Replacement Warranty that guarantees full replacement if your appliance fails within the first year. Make sure you read the fine print. You must put the failed appliance in the Original carton, along with original proof of purchase. Hence the reason I kept my mixer in its original box, along with the receipt. This box is made of a very durable cardboard with a smooth outer coating. After eleven years of putting this mixer in and out of the box, the only show of wear is along the upper edges near the box opening.

Final thought from me:

I thoroughly enjoy using this mixer. It has never given me a minute of concern and has helped make baking a fun family affair. I would highly recommend this KitchenAid appliance to anyone. Check out the KitchenAid websites and explore their newest products. There are several new phone numbers you can use to contact them with if you prefer to ask specific questions. They are very helpful.
