A great buy, easy to use, gets the job done, and is darn cute! - Sunbeam 450 Watts Heritage 2346 / 2347 / 2348 / 2349 Stand Mixer I bought the Sunbeam 450 watt Heritage mixer recently and have been very pleased with it. I previously owned a Ha...
I was ecstatic to find the Heritage design. It is almost identical to the one my mum-in-law received as a wedding gift in 1939, and which has been in use since then, although the stand was misplaced during a move in 1996. The ancient machine is extremely heavy and the arthritis prohibits me from using it as a hand mixer any longer, so when I found the new machine at Target, I bought it on the spot.
At first, I was put off with the light weight of the machine, but I’ve convinced myself that materials science has changed and you no longer need heavy to achieve quality.
I also find the stainless steel bowls included with the mixer to be flimsy. I’m not sure how the lighter gauge stainless steel will hold up to years of use.
The tilt mechanism makes me crazy; the release button is in an awkward place and takes some concentration to depress the release. However, that is rather a moot point because, like other reviewers have said, the entire tilt thingy failed completely the second time the mixer was used. Fortunately, the bowl contained nothing more than one half dozen egg whites (would have been an angel food cake).
I hate to be an old person bewailing the good old days but I wish the marketing geniuses would use a little common sense. My mother used her wedding gift toaster and mixer for more than 35 years before the first failure; my mom-in-law’s 1951 toaster is still in use. I have a Hamilton Beach Mixette that I bought in 1968 and it still works like it did when it was new.
Nowadays, though, it seems like the manufacturers place more emphasis on color or design and cut their costs in quality. $99.00 is plenty to pay for a mixer, but if it takes a price tag of $125.00 to produce a quality product, then I would rather have the higher-priced machine. I could have waited another month to buy this mixer; price was not the reason I bought this model.
