My wife and I make lots of bread every week and our Kitchen Aid was struggling with a recipe that calls for 5 1/2 cups of flour. We read several reviews including those for the Magic Mill, the Viking and the Delonghi.
We ordered the Delonghi and it arrived today. We immediately set out to make some bread. Without reading the manual, I went ahead with a recipe some friends use with their Magic Mill. This recipe calls for 5 pounds of flour, which is quite a bit. It all fit into the bowl very nicely. However, it immediately became apparent that this was too much flour for the Delonghi to handle. The motor kept stalling and was running very hot. We then looked at the manual and it explained that the maximum amount of flour in the Delonghi for breads was 3 1/2 pounds. I pulled 1/2 of the mix out and tried to knead it, but the mixer kept stalling. I then cut it in thirds and still had the same problem.
At this point, I pulled the Kitchen Aid out and finished the kneading - 1/3 at a time. It handled it where the Delonghi could not and I should point out that this is a 325 watt model as opposed to the 980 watts claimed by Delonghi.
On the plus side, it appears that if you are mixing recipes that aren’t as tough as bread, the Delonghi would do a great job. The bowl is huge as are the blades. The splash guard is of excellent design and it did a great job of keeping all the flour in the bowl.
As a side note, once the bread kneading was complete and both mixers cleaned, we decided to do a test. We put 2 egg whites in both the Kitchen Aid and the Delonghi and turned them on high speed. The Kitchen Aid completed the “meringue” test in 65 seconds while the Delonghi took 95 seconds.
If we didn’t make bread but just needed a large capacity mixer, we’d probably keep it. However, we are returning the Delonghi and will be purchasing a Magic Mill.
