This review is for the Canadian model, the Kitchenaid 4KHM7T, which is the top Kitchenaid hand mixer model in Canada currently. It looks identical to the KHM7T but there may be some non-obvious differences.
I bought one of these to replace a cuisinart mixer that self-destructed on me. In comparing the two, I note in this mixer’s favor that:
- the tail is squared off thus allowing that end of the mixer to be rested on a countertop; it will even sit by itself on the countertop with no problem as the power cord is attached off on the right hand side
- the eject button is in a standard location
- it starts up in ‘off’ mode
However, its relative downsides are as numerous:
- it is considerably less powerful
- top speed is approximately 1/2 that of the cuisinart
- does not come with any accessories (e.g. whisk attachment)
- point of interface of the power cord to the mixer does not/cannot pivot, and its side location limits where the mixer can be used (power must come from your right)
- only 7 speeds (and no 9 speed model available in the Canadian market)
- the handle/grip is too awkward to hold. There is a small area where the handle is rounded and comfortable to grasp, but towards the front it becomes squared off. In grasping your index finger around the recessed ‘trigger’ area of the grip, the rest of your hand has to make it around this squared off area. This makes it unpleasant to use.
- it does not have a ’slow start’ feature that accellerates the speed slowly. Or rather, I should say that it claims to, but the ’slow start’ is more like simple natural acceleration, rather than gradual application of power. There is a difference. You feel a jerk and observe rapid natural acceleration with this mixer. With the Cuisinart, it appeared to be smooth gradual application of power.
I have only had this mixer for a month so I can’t rightly judge its longevity. The Cuisinart model that I’m comparing to is no longer current and I don’t know how this mixer stacks up to Cuisinart’s current lineup.
Hopefully these mixers last longer/are more reliable than the Cuisinart. However, because of its faults I will probably replace it well before it breaks.
