Yet another gift that my husband and I received for our wedding a little over a year ago was Black and Decker’s Spatula Smart Mixer, Mx40. As a gift, it is a really good mixer. It does just what I want it to do- which is, well, mix.

There is a ‘power boost’ that this mixer boasts. I don’t really notice any difference. Oh sure, it works better than my mother’s mixer- but her’s is almost ten years old. Anything made after that is bound to work better than hers. I’m going to be honest here. I’m not the cook in the family. That title belongs to my husband (yes- my husband cooks. Not only that, but he cleans, does laundry, and washes windows… and he’s all mine ladies). He likes to pretend that he’s a gourmet chef, cooking up wonderfully complicated meals, and showing off to, well, his wife and his fourteen month old son. Seems pointless, doesn’t it? Well, we let him believe that he’s a good cook (Kidding here- he really is an excellent cook. Probably explains why I haven’t lost all of my pregnancy fat yet.). The moral of the story? I think that the power boost that this mixer is known for just helps my husband feel better about his cooking skills.

So what do I think of this mixer? It does the job. I’ve used the spatula attachment twice, and then decided that I didn’t really need to have it. Oh, it works just fine, and is nice to have. But why bother with another item that you need to wash? Okay- so maybe it doesn’t take that long to wash the spatula attachment. What else do I not like about this attachment? Try the size. It’s easy to lose in the bottom of my cooking utensil drawer. The few times that I have used the attachment, I had to go searching through the drawer to find it. Not fun.

Another gripe that I have is all the recipes that call for a medium speed. This mixer, unlike others that I’ve used, has four speeds. Each speed is numbered one through four (Zero is for off- cute). With an even number of speeds, I can figure out which one is medium. With a five speed mixer- medium would be number three. With a three speed blender- medium would be number two. With a four speed blender- well there is no medium. So I do the best that I can, and hope that the directions don’t mean much.

I do like the cord on this mixer. It’s much longer than the cord for my mom’s mixer. I have a small kitchen, so if I happen to be baking something that requires constant mixing (no stopping), but I need to answer the phone across the kitchen- I can just lift the bowl and the mixer, and walk to the other side (mind you, my kitchen is at the most four feet across), and answer the phone.

Being the novice cook in my household, I am happy with this mixer. It is a little more powerful than my cooking skills require though. Being the ‘gourmet’ cook that my husband is, he finds this mixer to be exactly what meets his cooking needs. We are both happy with our choice- but I think that we could have gotten away with something a little less fancy.
