I have had many ‘cheap’ mixers over the years and always knew when it was time to throw it away and buy another. My indication was when it would start smelling hot, or even start smoking!

I make a lot of cookies and always mix the dough with a hand mixer. You might ask why I wouldn’t want to use a stand mixer and the answer is simple…I don’t like appliances all over my kitchen counters. I like to be able to put them away in a drawer or cupboard. Since stand mixers take up a lot more room, I’ve always stayed with the hand mixers.

Most mixers do just fine for small jobs, like whipping cream and pudding, etc. But when it came to the larger things like cookie dough and mashed potatoes with cream cheese, I was always disappointed in the hand mixers. My solution was to put a new mixer on my Christmas list several years ago. Much to my delight, I was given this Kitchen Aid 3 speed mixer and it has never let me down. (I believe it was Christmas of 1993.)

I use this mixer extensively and have not had one moments problem with it. The stainless steel beaters are dishwasher safe and they whip right through cookie dough and potatoes with no problem. No smoke either! I rarely have to use it on the highest speed; low or medium is sufficient.

I make cheese cakes quite regularly and one of the requirements in my recipe is that the batter must be firmly whipped. With a low-end mixer you would have to whip the mixture for several minutes. With this Kitchen Aid, I can see the right consistency in just a few short minutes. Same goes for whipping cream. You don’t have to stand at the counter for a long time whipping cream; it is done in a short time.

This mixer is quieter than many I have had and it has a great base for standing it on end when you are needing to set it down. Many of the cheaper mixers don’t have that base where you can set it down and you have to lay them on their sides, getting your batter or mixes all over the counter. Clean up is also easy on the mixer. I don’t know the material that the body is made of, but a simple wipe job keeps it clean.

I know this mixer is more money than most people will want to spend, but in this case the saying is true…“You get what you pay for!”
