I have owned this product for about a year now, and was so thrilled when I first got it! As a cake decorator, the increased capacity from my smaller KA mixer was going to save me a lot of time and effort. (I have had my smaller 4.5 qt KitchenAid for 12+ years, and never had a problem–I love it!!)
Unfortunately, upon the third use, my speed switch stuck in the on position–I had to unplug the mixer to get it turned off. On the “pros” side, when I called KA they were very cordial and promptly replaced the mixer with a brand new one. However, my new one ended up with the same exact problem–roughly after 20 uses or so. Once again, KA offered to replace it–but having the same problem twice is two times too much for me. Besides, I know 8 other cake decorators who have purchased this machine within the last year, and **every single one** of them has had this same problem at least once. One person is on her 5th mixer!! I do not know anyone who owns it who has not had this problem.
As much as I love the capacity of this one, I’m not going to take my chances on another. (KA is buying my 6 qt back from me for what I paid for it, although they will not pay for me to ship it back to them, which really has me annoyed.) I am either going to keep using my 4.5 quart, or take a look at a couple of the other larger capacity mixers, such as those made by Kenwood (7 qt) or Magic Mill (8 qt).
Finally, as for the noise–it is very loud, but I think you probably need to expect with a motor this large. Frankly, I got sort of used to it, although it is mildly annoying.
