I received my Kitchen Aid Classic Series K45SS stand mixer for Christmas a number of years ago and have become so attached to it that I would rather do without a dishwasher than do without my mixer. Sound implausible? It’s true! I still don’t have a dishwasher (unless you count my husband, who’s actually washing dishes right now, as I’m typing this Epinion… what a guy), but my faithful Kitchen Aid has its honored place at the end of my countertop.
It is incredibly, luxuriously easy to just pitch some ingredients into the bowl and turn it on and let it mix while I do something else. Feels almost guilty, you know? Like, I ought to be working harder at this. My children love it because they get to enjoy home-baked things a lot more often. I love it because it makes cooking for a crowd much easier. I often am called on to make quantities of food for our church suppers, and my Kitchen Aid does most of the grunt work for me.
I have a pal who’s simply ga-ga over her Oster stand mixer, but when I used it, it just seemed flimsy in comparison to my behemoth Kitchen Aid.
I use the mixer paddle most often, but the kneading hook is to die for — works like a charm — no more kneading that bread dough, it does it all for you. The whisk is also convenient for whipping or mixing liquids. My absolute favorite feature is the speed toggle… there aren’t just three basic speed settings, there are infinite speeds because it’s controlled by a sliding switch.
There are other attachments you may purchase separately. I can recommend the grain grinder and the meat grinder; they do a great job. You may not produce mass quantites of ground meat in seconds, but you should be able to do enough for your family. Imagine, grinding your OWN hamburger meat, and knowing exactly what’s in it. You can control the fat content or the “mystery meat” factor. Also, making bread from your own ground wheat is just so tasty, you may not ever want to eat store-bought bread again.
No, you better not reach for my Kitchen Aid, or you might draw back a nub.
