My favorite kitchen appliance!! - KitchenAid 300 Watts KSM90 Ultra Power Series Stand Mixer I received this Kitchen Aid Power KSM90 mixer about seventeen years ago from my husband as a Christmas present and...
If only more appliances, kitchen and otherwise, could be more like my Kitchen Aid Ultra Power mixer! I wish my car were this great!
There it sits, the gleaming beauty of my kitchen, a powerful, gleaming snub-nosed cobalt workhorse! Now, I am not not the type to wax lyrical about household appliances. Not being wealthy, I rarely have the tools I would love to have to do the job right, and not being acquisitive (at least in this department!), I don’t lose too much sleep over it; I’m a make-do kind of girl when it comes to "stuff". But my Kitchen Aid mixer stands as a shining exception, and every time I use it, whether it’s for a major job or something minor, I’m so very happy that I have it.
This machine does what you want it to do: it mixes, with power and ease. It never breaks, never even stutters or fusses, never groans at a heavy load or makes that dire prelude-to-disaster smell that more feeble kitchen appliances are prone to do. It handles big jobs and heavy doughs; it whips and beats and mixes; it even, with its gleaming and equally sturdy attachments, grates hard Parmesan cheese, squirts out pasta, and grinds and shreds all kinds of stuff. Theoretically, it can grind and stuff sausage - though, as a vegetarian, I expect never to explore that dimension of its skills. It can do all kinds of stuff that I can’t even remember.
When it mixes a "regular" load - a cake batter, or cookies, or something like that, it does so efficiently and thoroughly. Kitchen Aid stand mixers have what I think they call a "planetary action"; the bowl stays locked in place in the stand, and the beater moves inside the bowl. I guess it moves in a faintly elliptical pattern or something, which ensures that you don’t have to do a lot of scraping down the sides or stop-starting to get all the stuff in the bottom of the bowl incorporated into the mix. (Can you tell I’m not a technical writer?) Anyway, whatever it is that it does, it does so efficiently and cleanly, without a second’s pause for complaint. Great mixing! What more can I say?
For beating egg whites or cream (yum-yum!), you use a balloon whisk in place of the regular beater. It beats perfectly, easily, rapidly - no sweat, no tendonitis for you, no spattering or splashing or clattering against the sides. Perfecto!
There’s also a dough hook, for kneading bread doughs & stuff like that. I haven’t used it too often - but I’m fully confident that when I need it, there it will be, working as efficiently as everything else about this glorious machine.
Ah, but here’s the beauty part: you can purchase attachments (totally easy to use, even I have no problem) that will grate cheese (even hard cheeses) and do all kinds of stuff that you might ordinarily look to a food processor to do. And when it’s canning season, one of the attachments separates seeds from pulp - a job I’d much rather do with this quiet, efficient machine than by any of the other methods available (and, believe me, I’ve tried ‘em all!) My Kitchen Aid mixer does it all infinitely better than my Braun food processor - no shaking, no loud scary noises, no clacking or rattling, just a smooth purr as the powerful motor does its job. You can add a pasta-making thingy, and a sausage-making gizmo.
The grater is probably the thing I use most often; it’s such a pleasure to use that I’ve even convinced my kids that it’s a privilege and a treat to be "allowed" to grate the cheese - a task that previously would clear a 3-block radius around the kitchen!
See, this is what a machine should do: it should work without a hitch, each time and every time, and without twitching or shaking or making grinding sounds or putting out smoke. You shouldn’t have to think about an appliance - it’s a machine, it’s there to serve you (not the other way ’round!), and it should do so happily and without protest each and every time you need it to perform.
My Kitchen Aid has the advantage of being beautiful, as well - it gleams with a healthy rich color and stainless steel, sitting there dependably in the corner of my counter waiting to do my bidding. It’s easy to clean - and because I love it so dearly, I actually do keep it shiny and nice (unlike many other things in my kitchen, sorry to say). What a beauty - truly the pride of my kitchen! I’ve had mine for over 5 years, with never so much as the thought of a problem - there’s nothing else in my household, human, mechanical, or otherwise, that I can say the same about!
Does it have a drawback? Well, only the merest, faintest of ones, and one I could fix easily if I would just get around to buying the pouring shield. Because of its design, with the bowl on a platform directly under the beater, which is directly under the motor, it can be kind of hard to pour stuff into the bowl while you’re using it - there’s no "offset" or whatever you’d call it on a conventional mixer, where the bowl is out in front of the machine itself. So you have to develop techniques to get around this little inconvenience, and maybe it’s easier to make a mess on the counter under it if you’re not careful. But you can buy a plastic shield that gives you a wide spout to dump stuff into, off to one side, and that also covers the bowl to control some of the flying-around flour. Frankly, I’ve just been too lazy and/or cheap to spend the few bucks, and it hasn’t been that big a problem (as I said, I’m just a "deal with it" kind of girl).
Now, what more could you possibly want from any machine?! Is there anything in your house you can say has been as completely, perfectly efficient and trouble-free? NOt at my house, I can tell you!
