Kitchen Aid Classic Series K45SS Stand Mixer
I”ve been using Kitchen Aid mixers for almost forty years (strange since I am only 29!) and have loved them all. I love to bake and bake a lot, frequently. I need a mixer that will always work and be strong enough to keep up with me. Reliable is definitely the word to describe this Kitchen Aid Mixer. It”s always there for you and will do most everything.
The machine has a strong motor that can mix batch after batch of cookies without overheating. It has a locking mechanism which keeps the beater-head down, a digital speed selector, and three beaters (whip, flat beater, and dough hook). A gazillion attachments are available which will do everything from stuff sausage to grind flour.
The Kitchen Aid mixers perform for years without any problem. My current K45SS has performed without any difficulties and I use it on a daily basis. I will say that over the years the attachments have changed from cast aluminum to plastic and do not perform quite as well as they did in years past, then again, neither do I.
The Pluses: This machine is a nice size. It will whip a single egg white or up to 10 (depending upon size of eggs). It is easy to control and has a great motor that does not overheat. I have never had this mixer stop on me. I have had other mixers burn out their motors.
The Minuses: This machine is heavy and has a large foot print. You better have counter space for it. It is too heavy to move it from an inconvenient location (closet, high shelf, low shelf, under the bed) to use it. I find that this machine is too small for a “goodly” quantity of dough and the dough will tend to climb over the head of the dough hook and this creates a mess and therefore a cleaning job.
I love this machine for whipping egg whites. I love it for whipped cream. I love it for traditional French butter cream. The metal bowl allows you to chill or heat the contents of the bowl that helps with Bavarian creams and gelatin based desserts. All of these creams and the basic butter and sugar cream base for cakes come out wonderfully with this mixer. You do have to stop it and scrap occasionally. Although this machine is not as large as its big brother or other “super” mixers, its bowl is small enough to fit into the fridge. This is very convenient.
I own both this Kitchen Aid and Kenwood (7.5 quart) and I love them both and wouldn”t give up either. I love the Kenwood for huge projects, but the Kitchen Aid is great for delicate work. The Kenwood is twice the price
Buy this Kitchen Aid if you are a serious cook (or want to look like one). If you bake in great quantities buy a bigger machine. If you want to whip cream occasionally, the Kitchen Aid is overkill (just slip the cream into a jar and shake it.) The Kitchen Aid is pricey ($240) but it will last you 20 years at least. So as long as you don”t loose it in a divorce, it is really a very inexpensive machine. I am not keen on some of the attachments (bowl shield) but these are extra purchases. Don”t buy this machine if you don”t have the room to dedicate to it. Don”t buy it if you don”t like to cook. Buy this baby if you want serious help in the kitchen.
