I am absolutely convinced that this is the mixer God used to stir up the cosmos and send the galaxies into orbit. That’s how strong it is.

I struggled for years with a beautiful but seriously design-flawed stand mixer before remodeling my kitchen. I used that as an excuse to get rid of it and buy the one I’d been dreaming of, the KitchenAid K5SS.

There’s a lot to like about this machine:

• The bowl holds five quarts. If you’re a professional baker, that might not be enough for you, but for home bakers like me, it’s enough to hold double quantities of my favorite recipes. It also has a handle, which is very handy - no pun intended.

• It’s immensely strong. I do a lot of Austrian baking during the holidays, and my lebkuchen recipe has a lot of honey in it. It’s practically impossible to mix a honey recipe by hand because the dough is so stiff. So I just put the dough hook onto this baby and stir away with ease. My recipe blends beautifully, with no effort on my part.

• It has ten speeds, so I can control it very closely. The slowest is v-e-r-y slow indeed and is good when you are mixing liquids because they won’t splash. The fast is… well, fast. I don’t know what the rpms are, but I do suggest that you work your way up to it gradually so you don’t slosh your ingredients all over the ceiling.

• The bowl fits into a pair of curved arms that can be raised and lowered by a crank at the side. If I’m mixing something that isn’t too messy and I want to add a dry ingredient, or even dribble some liquid into it, I can carefully lower the bowl and add my ingredient. The manufacturer recommends against doing this because of course the beaters will only mix the top of the contents while the bowl is lowered, but it works fine for me.

• It’s easy to clean. The surfaces are white enamel on steel, and there are very few nooks and crannies for gunk to collect. So I wipe it down with a damp sponge sprayed with a little Simple Green after each use, and it stays looking good.

If I were designing it, there are a few tings I would change…

• It’s too tall to fit into any of my regular cabinets. So mine lives under the sink and I get a hernia every time I lift it out to use it.

• My whisk attachment doesn’t always scrape everything off the side of the bowl, so I have to stop it occasionally and scrape things down. But I think this may be a problem with most mixers.

You can get a number of attachments that will turn this workhourse into a food processor, meat grinder, or juicer. I don’t have any of those, so I can’t speak about them, but I do have the clear plastic thingy that snaps around the lip and allows you to pour ingredients into the bowl - in the raised position while the motor is running - without spilling them all over the counter.

I paid about $335 for mine a few years ago at a discount store. I’m not sure what they go for now, but if it’s less than $450, I’d consider it a good deal. This is probably the last stand mixer you’ll ever need to buy, so the amortized cost isn’t that much if you use it a lot.

KitchenAid makes well-designed, sturdy products and I’ve never had any problems with any of them. As an enthusiastic baker, this mixer has been a real life-saver for me.
