My KitchenAid and I have been apart from each other for a few months now.
When I moved to San Francisco, it went into storage in San Diego. Oh how I’ve missed it.
If you’re a serious baker, you have to have a KitchenAid. The one that’s right for you will depend on how much and what type of baking you do, so when you go shopping be sure to notice which attachments are compatible with which machines. This one comes with a stainless steel bowl, the standard whisk, a dough hook, and an attachment for folding ingredients in (ex: beaten egg whites or whipped cream). Other attachments are available separately.
My sister gave me my KitchenAid for my birthday. I had known that I wanted one from the time I was a kid and would see my mom setting hers up on the counter. I knew some goody was in the works.
That KithchenAid had been my grandmother’s. Needless to say, a KithchenAid is a friend that will be with you for a very long time. And there are some things that only a KitchenAid can do for you. Before I got mine I went through a string of hand mixers with varying degrees of success. The most common problem with those was that the motors would get too hot and even burn out when working with a thick mixture, like bread dough. This has never been a problem with any KitchenAid that I have ever used. They stand up to the thickest, stickiest mixtures.
Another one of KitchenAid’s great points (although it’s quite obvious) is that it’s hand-free, leaving you to do other things, including adding ingredients while it continues to mix.
Clean up is also pretty easy. Just detach your attachments and wash them in warm soapy water. Then wipe down the machine with a wet soapy cloth.
If you’re not a serious baker, you probably don’t need a KitchenAid. It’s a pretty big appliance that takes up a fair amount of space. So if you only need a mixer for light jobs, or a couple of times a year, you might be better off going with a small hand mixer that is easier to store. On the other hand, if you just can’t make enough cakes, cookies, and breads, a KitchenAid will be your best friend. I can’t wait to be reunited with mine.
