The Delonghi Stand Mixer is sold under license by Delonghi USA, and is made by the Kenwood UK Company as the “Kenwood Chef” in Great Britain. Delonghi has a fabulous reputation and that they have chosen to associate themselves with Kenwood UK adds even more respectibility to this outstanding machine. This workhorse of a mixer features a solid metal body with tilting head, 710 watts of power (about 3/4 horsepower), planetary mixing action, variable speed with a “pulse” setting, 3 mixing attachments, 3 more outlets for accessories, a 10 year warranty on the motor and 1 year on the complete machine, a stainless steel bowl with a 5 pint capacity (that is 5 imperial 20 floz. pints I believe, not US 16 floz. pints), an overload protection feature, and attractive European styling (mine is stainless steel/white). This mixer is not designed to sit on your counter looking pretty and colourful, it is designed to sit on your counter and be worked hard every day for decades.
As a little girl in Great Britain, I remember my Dad buying my Mum buying her first Kenwood Chef more than 30 years ago, she is now on her 2nd Chef as she gave her 1st one to my brother several years ago.
I was visiting Mum and Dad a couple of months ago in Europe, and used the Kenwood Chef to make biscotti, scones and bread, while bemoaning the fact that Kenwood is not sold in the US. When I got back I started looking on e-bay for a similar mixer and was surprised to find the exact same mixer under the name Delonghi. There are several authorized dealers who sell them on e-bay and I bought a brand new one for $119 plus shipping. Due to a shipping problem, my seller upgraded mine from the DSM410 to the DSM700 which he usually sells for $259. The seller operates under the name “USA Business” out of Miami, Florida, and his e-bay seller’s name is “kelectrics” He lists many Delonghi items, including the mixers, and has done for several months now. My mixer arrived in it’s box with instructions, stainless steel bowl, K-Beater, whisk, dough hook, plastic scraper, flour guard and mini grinder, which is a blender base and four glass jars that fit on top of the blender base, for grinding small amounts of spices food etc and then you remove (tipping upside down) the blender base and unscrew it from the jar. Each jar comes with a plastic storage lid.
I use mine to bake bread, scones, biscotti, cakes (a 7lb fruitcake), mash potatoes, whisk egg whites etc, and use the grinder attachment to grind spices, nuts, puree fruit, grind sugar into powdered sugar, make pesto, chop olives into tapenade etc. I find that the recommended 6 cup maximum load is a bit flexible - you might use 6 cups of flour but can then add the other ingredients and still not overload the machine. The 7lb fruitcake was a bit too much of a load and it started the mixer moving around a bit! I removed a couple of cups of ingredients and mixed them seperately. If the machine overloads, it will not burn out the motor, but will stop so you can remove some ingredients. The planetary mixing action incorporates all ingredients evenly and perfectly.
One of the important reasons I chose the Delonghi “Kenwood” mixer over the competition Kitchenaid was that there is not much competition, The Delonghi blows the Kitchenaid away on power, styling, ease of use, and reputation. The Kitchenaid has only 375 watts of power and their professional mixer has 500 watts of power against the Delonghi’s range of mixers from the bottom of the line mixer 410 watt up to the top of the line mixer at 800 watts. In addition to that, Delonghi also have a professional range of mixers, called the “Major” I don’t know anything about the power on those. The Kitchenaid does not have a tilting head, but a thing that raises and lowers the bowl. This means the Kitchenaid needs to be much taller in order for the bowl to be raised and lowered away from the beater. The Delonghi’s tilting head locks in the up position to allow the beater to be lifted completely out of the bowl for ease of removal of the bowl or the beater. It locks in the down position for mixing. This means the Delonghi is a smaller, more compact unit. The bowl locks onto the base with a twist, and unlocks just as easily. The beaters twist and lock into place, and are easily removed with a twist of the hand. The beaters are teflon coated and are easily rinsed off under hot water.
Delonghi offers a wide range of attachments for the mixer, including a blender, meat grinder, pasta maker, potato peeler, juicer, coffee mill, grinder, grater, food processor, and grain mill - which I have ordered so I can mill my own flour. I found that ordering my accessories from the UK was cheaper than ordering them from Delonghi, and they are much more widely available. You have to search under “Kenwood parts and accessories” on the web. I recommend “Torre Electrics” in Torquay, or “Spares2go” in Southampton for parts and accessories. They take credit card orders, their parts are a good price and their shipping rates are as great as their service. If a part will fit the Kenwood Chef, it will fit the Delonghi mixer.
I have no doubt that this will be the last mixer I ever buy, and I don’t expect to ever have any problems with it. Kenwood is the gold standard in Europe and millions of Europeans rely on it.
As a sidenote, Delonghi also offers a wide selection of top of the line household accessories such as toasters, coffee makers, deep fryers, heaters, towel racks to name a few, which are beautifully styled and widely available.
