My KitchenAid experiences have - up until this purchase been very positive. In my kitchen can be found a KA dishwasher, Superba convection oven/range, two KA blenders (old and new styles), and 3 stand mixers dating from the fifties. Two are estate sale finds which are really too dirty to use but they still run. My most frequently used one is a K-4C in avocado, circa 1972, with the glass bowl. It was my mother’s and she used it mercilessly until cobalt blue hit the scene and I ended up with it. I am retiring this one just to avoid the inevitable accident of breaking the glass bowl, I will quit while I am even with Murphy’s Law.
My 6 quart Professional arrived last week. Once I unpacked it and set it up, I turned it on…what a racket this mixer makes. At medium speeds and higher, the shrieking sounds like a New Year’s Eve party noisemaker, very raspy. I called KA customer support, waited the customary 20 minutes on hold, and finally spoke with a helpful person. Before I went into detail describing my problem, I ascertained that she had worked for the company for 12 years and owned a new 6 quart professional herself. I held the phone to the mixer and let her hear all the motor speeds. She quickly agreed that it was not normal steel gear noise and that a replacement would be forthcoming. She said go ahead and use the mixer, it couldn’t hurt it.
So far I am impressed with the mixer’s capability to handle stiff cookie dough and cold butter. The paddle beater worked well. The wire whip seems flimsy in my opinion and it came with a warning label to not wash in the dishwasher. My K-4C has the fine old wire whip with the wide bands, made of welded stainless steel. Sorry, everything goes into my dishwasher. I doubled the recipe for a favorite pound cake of mine which requires a 16 cup tube pan, and this mixer handled it with no problem. The only complaint is the noise, this mixer screams louder than a skilsaw. I am hoping the replacement is quieter. The pouring shield and splash guard will probably find its way into the back of a junk drawer. I am getting accustomed to the bowl lift mechanism rather than the tilt back head which has served me so well in the past. The soft start feature is nice.
I will update my post when my new mixer arrives and comment on the motor and gear noise then.
I would not recommend this mixer until you have either worn out or outgrown a smaller KitchenAid stand mixer. When your cooking and baking needs grow to require a mixer this size, you will know it. It would not likely make a good gift. It’s like buying a 4 wheel drive diesel Chevrolet Suburban only to haul one bag of mulch. Make sure you need all this capacity. You will have to scrape the bowl for a small mixing job.
UPDATE AFTER REPLACEMENT: The new mixer does not have the raspy noise at medium speed and above, but still has a substantial gear whine. I have used it daily with no problems. It is much easier to use when I double or treble a receipe. Only time will tell if this microprocessor controlled motor will hold up. Meanwhile, it’s getting a workout! I have updated my overall rating from 3 to 4 stars.
