Kitchen Mixer Help

I wasn’t yet ready to plop down the $250 or so dollars for the stand mixer I wanted but I was ready for a hand mixer a tad bit more substantial than my $6 Sunbeam hand mixer that I’d got from Rite Aid a few years back. My choice was the Braun 4-in-1 MultiMix Hand Mixer (M880).

Most hand mixers employ a horizontal motor design. The Braun MultiMix uses a vertical power system, with the motor directly over the attachments to deliver optimal power. It features 3 speeds and a power pulse. In addition it has a hefty 280 watt DC motor with overheat protection. The other hand mixers I saw in the store had 200-220 watt motors.

The best appliances are the ones that you can buy when you’re in your 20s or 30s and be certain that they’ll be still be in your kitchen 40 or 50 years later. I received the Kitchen Aid stand mixer when I was 26, and I fully expect to be using it to bake birthday cadkes for my grandchildren. After all, my mom has had hers for over 30 years, and it’s still going strong.

This KitchenAid Ultra Power Plus Hand Mixer (Model # KHM5TB) has seen a lot of use in the 5-plus years that I have owned it. Having used a variety of hand mixers during the years, this one rates as my all-time favorite. Let me tell you why.

Description

A white mixer with classic lines, it measures 7 1/2″ long x 6″ high x 3 1/2″ wide. The front end of the mixer is rounded, presenting a modern appearance. There are two non-clogging vents at the front of the mixer and two on the back of the mixer. A heel rest allows upright positioning of the machine. Attached to the polarized plug is a round power cord that is permanently affixed to the hand mixer. The cord measures 66″ long.

If only more appliances, kitchen and otherwise, could be more like my Kitchen Aid Ultra Power mixer! I wish my car were this great!

There it sits, the gleaming beauty of my kitchen, a powerful, gleaming snub-nosed cobalt workhorse! Now, I am not not the type to wax lyrical about household appliances. Not being wealthy, I rarely have the tools I would love to have to do the job right, and not being acquisitive (at least in this department!), I don’t lose too much sleep over it; I’m a make-do kind of girl when it comes to "stuff". But my Kitchen Aid mixer stands as a shining exception, and every time I use it, whether it’s for a major job or something minor, I’m so very happy that I have it.

At Christmas everyone kept asking what my husband and I wanted. All I could think of was a hand mixer. Our fancier mixer had just given out and we only had a Braun left. You can’t make cookies with a Braun. My mother-in-law bought us this one for Christmas.

It is a hard plastic cover and I love the bowl rest feature. It makes it much easier to add ingredients and not make a mess.

The mixing blades are easy to clean, I just throw them in the dishwasher. The Hamilton Beach mixer I received as a gift is white and extremely easy to clean.

I had been researching for a stick blender for some time, when I saw Alton Brown use one on Good Eats on the Food Network, he highly recommended it, but never mentioned it by name. The Bamix DeLuxe Hand blender has a fairly distinctive design, so I researched on line until I found the Bamix. After reading descriptions and reviews, I decided that it was the blender for me. But beware, it’s blades don’t look anything like the ones you will see on the other brands of stick blenders out there, they look kind of puny, but they really work and the motor or the Bamix De Luxe is a powerhouse that does not poop out after a minute or two.

My main reason for wanting a stick blender is because I make a protein smoothie with ice almost every day ( and was looking for something easier to clean up after than my Braun stand blender). Most of the immersion blenders I looked into were not recommended for crushing ice - Bamix said no problem. Well, I looked all over my area (Virginia Beach) and could not find one, and was about to order it on line, when I happened to find one in a gourmet store in Chapel Hill, NC.
