Kitchen Mixer Help

My husband and I recently remodeled our kitchen. Our “before” kitchen was original to our 1940’s house, and in a word it was terrible. I was embarrassed of it and had absolutely no pride in the way it looked.

After replacing everything was sleek and modern cabinets and appliances, I realized that maybe my Avocado Green stand mixer from the 1970’s (handed down from my mom) wouldn’t look so great on my dark grey countertops. Not to mention that while it still ran okay, it tended to make a funny burning smell when ran on the higher settings.

I do most of the cooking in our household, but I was somewhat limited in my ability to bake from scratch because I lacked the one essential tool lusted after by all accomplished cooks; a stand mixer. So, I have been hinting around to my wife that I needed one in order to expand my cooking and baking roundtable so to speak. But the price of the nicer models has always kept me—and my wife—from taking to plunge. But this Christmas my wife surprised me with Etched/ Antique Copper Jenn-Air Attrezzi JSM900 Stand Mixer.

INTO THE MIX

I’ve been in the market for a stand mixer since my 1980’s vintage Sunbeam drew its last floury breath. The engineers at Sunbeam designed the motor cooling intake directly above the bowl. 20 years of flour build-up in the motor finally finished it off.

I looked at the Viking 5 quart mixer with its utilitarian styling, and quality brand name. It seemed a good choice until further research revealed alleged difficulties locking the attachments in place. It is heavy enough to need wheels to move it, and at $399.00, is more mixer than I would ever need.

Recently I finally broke down and said I had to have a stand mixer. I love my hand mixer, but for larger batches of things it can really wear my arm out. I went to a local kitchen store and happened to find the Jenn-Air mixers on clearance. I had never seen them before and thought they were very elegant and not your normal kitchen aid mixer which is what I had planned to purchase. After talking to a sales associate and her telling me what she loved about her mixer I was sold and headed up to the checkout with the heaviest small appliance I have ever owned.

I have always wanted a mixer, but the price was always too high. A friend of ours owns an appliance store and was clearing these out and sold it to us for $99. Obviously I jumped on that fairly quickly. I have seen these sold for $430.

3 attachments: whisk, flat beater and a bread mixing attachment.

The bowl is very pretty. It has flowers etched into it.

I actually like the copper color because it matches my kitchen. I do believe there are other colors it comes in. The attachments go on and come off easily. The arm lifts easily.

Since I can remember, Kitchen Aid stand mixers have been the gold standard when it comes to countertop mixing appliances. However, I was recently able to borrow a Jenn-Air Atrezzi stand mixer and was pleasantly surprised by it’s design, performance and ease of use.

I bought one of these.. beautiful design! The etched glass bowl is very attractive, you almost want to serve something in it.

It isn’t a heavy duty machine. In making Brioche, the mixer actually started smoking out the vent. I had to let it cool for quite awhile before trying it again.

When I was looking online and in the stores, the price was so high…. almost $300 some dollars everywhere. Then I found one on overstock.com for half the price and snatched it up. I was under the impression that this was a popular mixer and here to stay for awhile.
