This mixer has been around for quite awhile, and with good reason. It’s strong and durable. I bought this mixer because of a family member’s recommendation. My older sister started her own business as a wedding cake designer. Her business did very good and she got a reputation for creating great wedding cakes. One day she told me that her biggest problem with making the wedding cakes was burning out mixers, until she bought a kitchen aid mixer. She said that it was nearly indestructible and it did a better job of mixing heavy batter than any of the other blenders that she had used. So, a few weeks later I bought The Kitchen Aid K5SS stand mixer. I bought this mixer in 1988 and I am still using it.

This mixer is very powerful. It has a 350 watt motor that runs very smoothly. There are ten individual speeds for mixing that can be selected by sliding a lever that’s located on the upper side of the mixer. In the front of the mixer there is a socket for attaching accessories such as a meat grinder, grain mill, or pasta maker. I bought the optional accessories kit that includes the meat grinder, pasta maker, slicer/shredder, fruit/vegetable strainer, and sausage stuffer. I have used the meat grinder attachment many times and it really does a fine job of turning round steak into ground round for hamburgers, meat loaf, and spaghetti sauce. I still haven’t used the other attachments.

The Kitchen Aid K5SS comes with a dough hook, a whisk beater, and a batter beater. The mixing bowl is made of stainless steel, has a 5 quart capacity, and a handle. The mixing bowl snaps onto a crank driven lift that raises and lowers the bowl. The included owner’s manual is very complete and includes some excellent recipes. When I purchased this mixer it was only available in white, in recent years it has been produced in a variety of colors.

This mixer was not designed to be moved around. It’s quite heavy and it would be best to set it in a permanent spot on the kitchen counter or wherever there’s room for it to function. The weight of this mixer is a very good indicator of just how well built The Kitchen Aid K5SS is.

These mixers are made of solid steel and coated with a thick layer of enamel. While this mixer is mixing ingredients, there’s no moving around on the surface that it’s sitting on. It stays solidly in place. Cleaning this mixer is a snap. I usually wash the mixing bowl with regular liquid dish wash and I wipe the down the mixer with a damp cloth. With the exception of a few very small nicks and scratches (from moving and shipping), my Kitchen Aid K5SS still looks and operates like new. This mixer is manufactured in the USA and it’s the ultimate stand mixer for home use.
