I begged for this mixer for Christmas. After recieving it, the first time I turned it on, it emmitted a burning motor smell. Hoping that it was just breaking in, I used it.

I trusted KitchenAid because I’ve owned 2 of the smaller 4.5 qt models, and they have been superb mixers - not a complaint with them - other than they are too small. Which is why I wanted the larger one.

I also own the 11 cup Professional Food Processor, the Blender, 3 Hand mixers. All have performed wonderfully.

Back to the mixer at hand.

The first thing I made was a simple cookie recipe, doubled, and it struggled slightly. Then I made 2 loaves of whole wheat bread, which strained it to the maximum. I was within the allowance according to KA about max cups of flour, it still came very close to stopping several times, and smoke was pouring out of it by the time the kneading was completed. I seriously questioned the mixer’s capabilities at this point.

The third item I made was a double batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I’ve made this recipe dozens of times in the small mixers - and other than the bowl trying to overflow, never had a problem. I added all the ingredients to this one, and the final mixing stage just about brought it to a halt. It poured white smoke out the rear, stinking up the whole house, and barely would mix in the oatmeal. When I shut the mixer off, it was boiling inside - I could hear the grease boiling…it was at this point that I knew the mixer was doomed.

The next thing I made was bread again. It failed. Died during the kneading process, and didn’t turn on again. The thermal switch didn’t trip - it simply stopped in its cloud of white smoke and would do no more.

I’m disappointed in KA, as i’ve sworn by them for the past 12 years. This is the biggest piece of junk i’ve ever owned, and my little KA will kick this big-boy’s butt.

Other HORRID things include the fact that you can’t put the beaters in the dishwasher (who’s stupid design was this???). There is not “speed between a speed” like in the little models. It struggles with the slicer/shredder. The bowl-lift design is horrible. The bowl is big, but doesn’t contain its contents as well as the small ones. It weighs LESS than my little ones…meaning it’s not as well built, and is will wiggle itself off the counter while kneading bread.

This is a horrid mixer. Don’t buy it. I’d love to recommend the little KA’s, which I’ve had great luck with, but I’m so put out with this mixer, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I simply cannot trust KitchenAid any longer. I wonder what they’re going to do about replacing it, as I don’t want a replacement - simply a mixer that works, which is obviously not going to be this model. I’ve been looking at Vikings and DeLonghi’s.

I honestly have nothing good to say about this mixer. What a disappointment.
