I know, I know - how good could a hand mixer possibly be? I have been using a cheap GE hand mixer for decades. You know, the type that has “standard looking” chrome beaters - thick flat ‘v’ blades with that center post. They sure seem to get a lot of food wrapped around the blades and that center post.
The first thing you notice on the Kitchen Aid is the beaters are radically different. They are stainless steel (dishwasher safe), have rounded edges and look more like wire whisks than anything else. At first glance they look so flimsy you would wonder how they could even turn out a decent mashed potato. It’s deceptive - the Kitchen Aid beaters work far better than any cheap mixer. I don’t know what’s special about that design but they turn out mashed potatoes with no lumps in half the time of a cheapo mixer. Cookie doughs and brownie mixes are no problem. Beating stiff egg whites takes about 1/3 the time versus a cheap mixer.
You have to do some gear shifting when upgrading from a $7.99 hand mixer to a $49.99 hand mixer. When the Kitchen Aid manual suggests “speed 2″ for mashed potatoes there is good reason for that. It doesn’t work like a cheap mixer, where you might be inclined to head right for top speed for that type of job. The Kitchen Aid does it’s job without relying on sheer brute force or high speed. In short, it just works better. Not quite sure how, but it does.
The only thing I don’t like about the design is the stiff, round power cord. It seems overkill for a .6 amp appliance. It comes in the box with a twist tie, and that’s what many of us would use to keep the cord when the mixer is in storage. But you end up with a stiff, zig-zag of a cord that can get in the way - and in your mixer bowl. A lighter, more flexible power cord would eliminate this nuisance.
If you have been using a cheap hand mixer and/or don’t have space for a stand mixer, do yourself a favor and upgrade. There aren’t a lot of obvious differences when you just look at hand mixers in the store. All I can tell you is this Kitchen Aid works better than any cheap mixer and it’s well worth it.
