A few years ago the office took up a collection to buy a co-worker a wedding present. What they (my coworkers) chose was a kitchen aid stand mixer. I thought, “What a stupid present. Who needs one of those. Only professional bakers use stand mixers.”

Well, I have gotten a little older, and really learned how to bake. Low and behold, for my birthday I requested a kitchen aid mixer. Who would have thought?

Now I understand what all of the fuss is about. The machine is so versatile - you can do just about anything with it.

Even though I am just an amateur baker, I *love* my mixer.

First of all, you aren’t holding a hand beater for minutes on end. For example, I have a recipe that calls for beating eggs and butter together for five minutes. I can’t tell you how much I love throwing them in, turning the machine on, and preparing the next ingredients. Baking is so much faster, and less exhausting. For me, this is reason alone to have a stand mixer.

Second, it so convenient to have it on the counter top. I am so much more likely to use it, as opposed to my hand mixer. With the hand mixer I had to drag it out, put it together, etc. But the stand mixer is just calling out, “use me, use me.” Trust me, you are going to bake and cook more if you buy this. It is easy to use, easy to clean, and convenient.

One note of caution…bring someone strong to the store with you, or mail order it. It is very heavy. But if you are lucky enough to have counter space for it you can put it down and leave it there.

Two final points:

1) I did a lot of research before choosing this mixer. Although the more expensive kitchen aids offer bigger bowls, they are unnecessary for many uses. Also, I heard over and over again that the stationary bowl on this mixer is superior to the other models on which the bowl raises and lowers. Definitely check into this.

2) the “egg beater” attachment is not dishwasher safe. A pain, but not a huge deal. Very easy to wash.
