In researching which Kitchen Aid mixer to buy, I checked the American and Canadian websites, and epinions. I found people’s opinions so helpful to me in my research that I now want to help someone else the same way! So here it is:
In reading reviews about the various mixer models I found that there seemed to be a big gap between the home model (the Ultra Power) and the taller, more powerful Heavy Duty and Professional models. At that time the Artisan had only been out in the US for a month or so, so there weren’t any reviews on it yet.
I have the Kitchen Aid Artisan KMS150PS, in cobalt blue. I have rigorously put this machine through it’s paces in the last 6 months, and am very impressed with it’s performance!
A friend who cooks a lot recommended the Professional model to me, as it had the absolutely necessary larger bowl (she said that the 4.5Q wasn’t big enough for anything, and she actually returned her Ultra Power and got the Prof model for this feature). Now, for me, I really liked the tilt-head feature, and after reading several reviews of the different models on epinions, the tilt-head models came out on top. The height of Prof and Heavy Duty bowl lift models was too much for my counter space, and to change the beaters you have to actually dunk the beater back into the bowl to change it.
That is one great feature of the Artisan - its height. The standard height of kitchen cabinets above your counter is 16″ and this mixer fits nicely underneath at 14″. Due to the size and weight of these mixers, it is not something I want to be moving on and off the counter all the time! The Professional and Heavy Duty models are 2-3 inches taller than the Artisan making it a space hog on your counter, that won’t fit underneath standard cabinets!
In Canada, the Artisan was only available on Kitchen Aid’s TV offer website. As a part of this package offer, I got the pasta roller set and the quilted cover included! I make pasta 2-3x per week, using a hand crank, so having this attachment has been heaven. It makes pasta creation so easy it’s almost sinful! I mix the pasta dough in the bowl, and you can use either the flat beater or the dough hook to do the kneading for you, then attach the roller set and cut my prep time down to half.
How is the mixing? For all you bakers out there, this mixer gives a new meaning to the words “light and fluffy”. And for those stiff cookie batters, no more worries! I’ve found that the pouring shield, which is easy to assemble and use, is not necessary due to the deeper 5Q bowl, unless you are making about 8 dozen cookies - you may want to minimize the flour flying out on the initial mix. The beater reaches the ingredients at the bottom of the bowl every time. I usually scrape the sides of the bowl once during a mixture, and things turn out great!
In short, I believe this mixer fills the gap for home users by providing the same height as the Ultra Power, 25 more watts of motor power and the bigger 5Q bowl of the bigger models. It is truly the best of both worlds. The choice of colours is also an added bonus!
