Last year, I was looking for a stand mixer. I have a hand mixer at home, but if you’ve ever tried to mix something on low for 2 minutes, high for 5 minutes, then low again, you’re arm starts falling off.
After checking into it, I walked into Sears with a 10%-off coupon to look at the mixers. I’ve had good luck with Kenmore products in the past, and the mixer seemed to have good features: 2 stainless steel bowls, beaters, cookie dough hooks. The mixer is 350 watts, which is comparable to the second tier of Kitchen Aid mixers.
So I bought it, took it home, and started using it. I found the plastic coating to be easy to clean. The beaters are a little confusing until you get the hang of them - there is a right beater and a left, so make sure you have them in the right spot or else you’ll have what happened to me - I started beating my whipping cream and the beater dropped in with a big splash.
Once you get the beaters in the correct order, you turn the mixer on, and the buttons are really easy to use. It has a nice display of which speed you have it on.
Then the bowl stops turning. My understanding is that the reason the beaters have to be in the correct slots is because the one beater has the magnet in it that causes the gears on the base to spin the bowl around. So it stops spinning. If I have an out-of-body experience and watch myself, it would be kind of amusing to see me spin the equivalent of a lazy susan in constant wacking motions.
There is no room to scrape the sides with a spatula while the mixer is running. You have to stop the mixer, then scrape the sides, then restart it. If you have to add ingredients while mixing, you have to stop it, otherwise the powdered sugar poofs out everywhere, or the vanilla splatters on the top of the mixer (ok, my mind is still on whipped cream).
When done, it has a nice feature where you push the tilt button, lift up, and it locks the top of the mixer in place. The button to release the beaters is in an awkward place - it’s at the top of the mixer, so while the top is up, you have to reach around with one hand and push the button while keeping your other hand around the beaters to catch them.
I could not afford the Kitchen Aid mixer that I would have wanted at the time, so if I hadn’t bought this one, I would have no stand mixer right now. Even with all its faults, I still like it.
A note about whipped cream: you must watch it carefully while making it. If you stop mixing too early it will be runny, too late and it’s butter.
