A short time before the holiday baking season, my 12 yr old Oster stand mixer died. Was I upset? No! I finally had an excuse to purchase the Kitchen Aid Artisan Stand Mixer that I’ve been drooling over for several months.

I flinched at the price (I paid $239 at a local department store) but soon realized that it was worth the investment.

First of all, the sleek onyx mixer looks FABULOUS in my kitchen. Good thing….the darn thing is too heavy to put away and take out again! A small price to pay for a mixer that doesn’t shimmy across the counter! I’ve mixed double batches of a rather heavy biscotti recipe with no problems. And cookies? Well! My Christmas cookie baking sprees were delightful! What used to be a chore was a true pleasure this year.

The dishwasher safe 5 qt stainless steel bowl is easy to remove from the base and locks tightly into place for use. The mixer came with a dough hook, a wisk for beating eggs, making merengues, whipped cream etc. and a paddle for mixing sweet breads, cookie dough etc. The three attachments are not dishwasher safe but are very simple to wash by hand.

The mixer features 10 speeds ranging from a gentle mixing action to a powerful whipping. I’ve used the high speed and was very impressed with the lack of splashing and the stability of the mixer!

The mixer also came with a splash guard with a pouring spout. Well, I’ve used it a few times and was not pleased. Dry ingredients tend to stick to it. It is also tricky to put on.

I sent my old Oster Mixer off to small appliance heaven and didn’t shed a tear. I’ve found a new love, the Kitchen Aid Artisan Mixer. “Who wants cookies?”
