I recently received this as a gift and I’m CRAZY about it. I’ve used it at least once a day since I got it and I’m very happy with it. I haven’t yet used it for heavy bread doughs but I’ve made cookies and scones with fairly dense doughs and it makes quick of them. I love using it to incorporate things that were a pain to do by hand - like putting chilled butter together with dry ingredients - it just does it so quickly and easily.
I obsessively comparison shopped (with a lot of help from Epinions!) and went to see different mixers in stores. After my shopping, I knew I wanted a KitchenAid. It’s pricey - but no stand mixer is exactly cheap and when you’re talking about spending $140 for something that looks and feels lightweight vs. another $60 for something so sturdy there’s no contest.
Once I decided on the Kitchen Aid, the next choice was which model. The lowest prices I had seen were for the Classic ($169), the Ultra Power ($199) and the Artisan ($249). I chose the Artisan for the following reasons:
-Larger bowl capacity (5qt instead of 4.5)
-Bowl flexibility (For whatever reason, the Classic and Ultra Power models are recommended to be used with only the 4.5 qt bowl while the Artisan can be used with the 3qt, the 4.5qt or the 5qt. Of course, the bowl-lift type can also only be used the same size bowl it comes with.)
-Largest capacity with a Tilt Head style - I’ve heard from a friend who’s in cooking school that the bowl-lift mechanism tends to come apart and, while easily fixable, it can be a pain)
-Most power with a Tilt Head style, which seemed easier to use (for me, anyway)
-Comes with pour shield/splash guard
-Lots of adorable colors!
After a lot of research, I decided on the Artisan and even found it with a mail-in rebate offer of a 3qt. bowl and timer and was able to drop the hint (along with a %20 off coupon for Bed Bath and Beyond) and the mixer cost only $200.
I would definitely recommend this item!
